A used built up crf50 or klx110 bike. These bikes arent like cars - theres no 3 yr warranty with them from new so the advantage of buying a new bike over a used one is much smaller, especially if you are mechanically inclined as they are very easy to work on.
For under 1k you can pick up a used crf50 with marzocchis, taky 88 kit, billetware frame, smpro wheels, tbr swinger, twobros exhaust - (just a list of parts on one I sold for 995 a few months ago).
Depends what your budget is, but in terms of value for money, 900 quid on the above bike is unbeatable. If you are on a 500.600 budget then a stomp/wpb or fk1 should fit the bill fine.

If money allows then deffo a crf or klx.
If not the WPB bikes look great and seem great value for money, if i was looking to get a new bike they would be top of my list atm.
