Pit bike wiring - Ignition Switch
So, I have now fitted my new stator and wiring loom and am now about to start making my own loom for the electrics.
I have got it mostly planned out but I am unsure how to switch it all, I need all electrics to run switched from the ignition key but am unsure of the wiring of the key itself. It has 4 wires coming out of it using a multi meter I have found that 2 pairs make contact when the switch is on. Wires are... - Green - Red - Black / White - Black When Key off ---- Green + Black / White = Contact When Key on ---- Red + Black = Contact So, I need to know how to get power to switch through this, I bought a relay to handle the current for the electrics but I will need 12v to activate the relay but I'm not sure how to get 12v through the key. The standard loom I bought was just a kick start/ignition loom so doesn't have any battery connections on it. Cheers! Richard |
Re: Pit bike wiring
this is what I'm thinking....
http://www.rdphoto.co.uk/pictures/ignition.jpg is that ok? or could it damage the key switch? |
Re: Pit bike wiring - Ignition Switch
Looks fine, and you'll not damage the key switch anyway,
it is just a contact switch, the contacts inside will handle more current than the wiring. If you can get inside the key switch to check and clean the contacts thats always a good thing to service while you are doing the elecs anyway. At least you know its done and what the condition the contacts are in to start with (reduces the chance of potential future probs with the ignition barrel) :) |
Re: Pit bike wiring - Ignition Switch
cool thanks a lot!
Barrel is sealed so I can't check the contacts but it is brand new anyway so not too worried :) How is it normally done on full wiring looms? |

2 Attachment(s)
These any help :)

Re: Pit bike wiring - Ignition Switch
I think he wants a battery to run his relay, (must plan to run something from that!)
but mainly wanted to keep his ign. barrel/key as a switch for all the electrics including the relay feed :) |
Re: Pit bike wiring - Ignition Switch
If you have to use a battery then just switch a fused +12v supply through the key and relay all the big drain stuff that needs it.
Most standard road legal pit/monkey's I've seen don't have any relays apart from a starter switch relay and they work fine. The lighting circuit is normally seperate so wont be switched through the ignition. The custom loom on my monkey uses a non relayed ignition circuit, but the high and low beams are relayed (for a good reason ) as is the horn due to having twin-tone high output horns fitted. |
Re: Pit bike wiring - Ignition Switch
I want a battery, so no direct connections to the reg/stator.
A thought just occurred, if I out +12v through the red and black on the ignition key then what is on the other end of those wires? anything to damage in the stator etc by putting 12v the down it? |

sorry didn't understand that ^^^^
the loom/ignition I have is engine only so no feeds to lighting etc. |
