Fancy writing an article on pit bikes?

Hi Guys,

Were looking for one of you guys to write a article introducing the pit bike scene to be used on pbc.

The article must include main pit bike manufactures, the different racing leagues and main UK pit bike events that run at the moment.

And anything else that you think may be relevant!

You can either PM it to myself or e-mail using the form below.

Re: Fancy writing an article on pit bikes?

maybe this will stop some of the many questions that get asked daily,

just an idea, but.... why not get a few people, then you can merge them together, to save some one from writing it all, after all lots of people have differnt views and opinions, so would be good, if it came from more than one person

Could we make a short guide, Aka, lazy cnut who won't read loads, then make a more complex guide for those who care?

Also, Is putting some reviews in a good idea?

I have written one briefly on my demon x, and theres afew other good ones, but I fell the reviews bit is lacking

Re: Fancy writing an article on pit bikes?

Pit Bikesin various forms have been around for years. A pit bike started out to be any small bike used by car/motorcycle racer to navigate the “Pits” (the area designated for parking and setting up prior to an event). Today, pit bikes have evolved to look like mini versions of factory MX motorcycles, and have a full race series.
The classic 1950/1960's “mini-bike” was also a great way to navigate the pits. They typically had a 3HP Briggs & Stratton engine, pull starter, no suspension, and a brake that rubs on the rear tire to stop it. (Note: this particular one has the larger 5HP B&S--it’s scary fast...especially, with such a whimpy brake.)

The Honda Super Cub 50 came to the USA in the mid-1960s. This simple 50cc motorcycle started the entire Japanese motorcycle invasion. Millions upon millions were produced. The 4-stroke, horizontal engine layout is the basis for most pit bike engines of today. (The bike in the photo was used as a pit bike by a racer of a vintage Lotus Elan.)

Honda Z50 Mini Trail started it all. It was the first small Honda motorcycle produced to go off-road. Because their small size allowed them to fit in the corner of just about any trailer, Z50s saw a lot of duty as pit bikes. Introduced to North America in 1968, the bike saw numerous updates during the 30 years it was produced. For instance, in 1970 rear shocks were added. In the rest of the world they are called “Monkey Bikes.” Early Z50s, like the one in this photo (w/o rear shocks), are highly-collectible and when restored can sell for thousands of dollars.

The Honda XR-50F/CRF-50F mini-moto was the bike that most every motorcrosser started out riding. These 4-stroke 50cc engine dirt bikes (along with their many counterparts from Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc.) are the inspirational starting point for the pit bike craze.

The PIT BIKES of today retain the 10" or 12" wheels and basic 4-stroke motor of a minimoto; but in order to perform with a full-sized adult aboard, pit bikes are engineered to have a longer wheelbase, taller/wider handlebars, way more suspension, a punched out bore to 110cc, and many other tweaks. There is something about a pit bike’s toss-able size that make them hard to take too seriously...and a big reason why pit bikes are such a frickin’ blast to ride.
These bikes started to be mass copied by Chinese manufacturers. Most bikers agree that the more expensive Japanese originals of these pit bikes are much better constructed, and will last longer. But you have to consider that the engine used by Honda is Jialing, which is produced in China. Also other Chinese engines like the Lifan or the YX proved to be very well suited for professional use.

Re: Fancy writing an article on pit bikes?

Threw this together whilst perving on girls aloud

What do you want from your bike??
*Race?
*Toy?
*Field?
What age are you?
5?
20?
80?
What is your budget?
£150?
£2500?

Well, it doesn't matter, as the hobby of pitbikes can be adapted to any age, budgets, and play times.
If your getting a pitbike, the first thing to note is to ride one on the road, you must be old enough, have a valid liscince, and the bike must be taxed, insured, and mot'd.
If your planning on riding offroad, this means privately owned land, with the owners permission, and riding in a non anti-social manner I,E on a 20 acre field, and riding next to someones house!!
In general pitbikes got a very bad press off the news, but are actually an excellent way of introducing kids into bikes, and lets face it, most kids these days cant tell a 10mm spanner, from a 3/16th socket! Which in its self is a discrace, but thats another story.
Putting it simply, if your child is after a pitbike, go for the "best you can afford" Meaning, get a nice bike, with some decent safety gear.
I seem to adore my demon x, however, Stomp, Demon X, Thumpstar, Honda CRF range, x sport, monstermoto and BBR and im sure several others are very good.
The other advantage of a pitbike, is bits are very cheap, ranging from cheap chineese bits, upto full £4000 bikes.
Tools needed are very simple, a small socket set, scredrivers, and spanners will allow for basic maintainance.
Pitbike club are very welcoming, and have a good wealth of knowledge, with a comprehensive list of tracks and riding places in the uk.
