Never use anything abrasive when you do you don't get a smooth finish which consequently leads to the surface area attracting muck in no time at all.

Take the 1,500 grit, soak it in REALLY soapy water, (don’t let it dry out or it will start to scratch).

Get them as good as you can get them with that.

Then attach your polishing pad to your bench grinder or drill and polish them using buffer attachment.

I use the bench grinder ALL the time, most of the bikes I get in have spent most of their life in a garden unprotected from the elements;

I clean my exhausts with Wonder Wheels, just brush it on then rinse with soapy water and polish, they stay clean for anything up to 4 months with road usage.

I recently got a Ghost 125 to do up, the forks were completely orange with rust.
