Re: Bleeding brakes/Broken brake

dont pump the brake lever with the bleed nipple open. you pump the lever with the nipple closed, hold the pressure on the lever then open the nipple. don't let of the brake until the nipple is closed. also get a pipe and a little jug with some fluid in so you can see if your removing all the air

watch this video this is how you do it, you need some clear flexi pipe like what you see in fish tanks. You attach that to the bleed nipple, pump the back brake half way down open the bleed nipple to let some fluid/air out of the system then close the bleed nipple and let go of the brake peddle, that way your stopping air being sucked back into the system, just dont let go of the brake pedal before closing the nipple or your back to square one! Also keep the master cylinder topped up with brake fluid dont let it run out of fluid otherwise you will just let a load of air back in again.

i learnt using that video and sorted my brakes out.
Also the piston doesnt actually move that much only a little to make the pads contact the disc.
you will need some brake cleaner for the disc too to remove all that brake fluid thats gone all over it and make sure your pads dont contact the brake fluid, although, looking at that they will probably be soaked in it. Brake fluid and pads don't mix im definitely no expert but i reckon your pads will be contaminated and you may need some new ones.
Ohhh right thinking about it now I was being stupid that makes sense, thanks for that though, am going on holiday for a while so wont have chance to work on it for a while but will let you know how it goes!
Thanks

Re: Bleeding brakes/Broken brake

the advice above wasn;t very clear - you can bleed by filling with fluid from the top, but you MUST have some way of keeping the bleed nipple submergered or it just sucks air in.

A long bit of see through tube is the best, push it on, loop it up over the bars.

keep the res topped up (or air gets in)

open nipple, pump, close nipple, release - continue till you have no bubbles and the lever feels good.

by taking off the master cylinder you let a ton of air in, thats why it didn't work- pouring the fluid away wasn't a mistake, you would have replaced it anyway whilst bleeding up.

shringe/vacuum methods work, but unless you have the kit then just try with the standard method first, most times it works great.
