Unleaded VS Premium petrol question

Noticed in most petrol stations they now have the premium petrol pumps for the high perfomance cars like Subaru impreza's, honda s2000, audi r8 etc.
Research has taught me the premium fuel burns easier than the normal unleaded.
So if i put this premium/optimax/super petrol in my Honda cub running a Stomp pitbike 120cc engine, 24mm carb (i think), will this improve MPG, would i get any extra power, would it damage my engine, would i have to advance the ignition timing to account for the faster burning fuel?
Is it worth the extra few pennies i dont have?

Re: Unleaded VS Premium petrol question

I know for a fact that the same engine on a dyno running Tesco premium 98 made 1/2hp more than tesco standard 95. That was on a 613cc supermoto single kicking out 72bhp. No idea on fuel consumption on that motor as it was not a consideration. If you scale it down to a 150cc motor then its not much of an improvement & I dont think the extra mpg it may or may not give would be worth it.

You won't notice any difference as a simple engine has no knock sensors so cannot retard the timing to the optimum point to gain the proper benefits from high octane fuel.

Re: Unleaded VS Premium petrol question

I've always run mine on Premium fuel, I've noticed that my bike seems to start a lot better when it's got some fresh fuel in it too... If I fill it with new premium fuel, it will fire without any problems... If its been sat in the garage for a week or so and the octane levels have dropped a little, it will be more fussy to start... I think my bike runs a lot better with the premium stuff.. Not that it's pushing out 5BHP more, it just runs a lot smoother with it... But then again I've got the 160 V4 which has enough compression to hold the weight of a 13 stone person on the kick start, so I think it should be run on premium fuel

Thats because it didnt have knock sensors and so couldn't advance or retard the timing to compensate for pre-ignition.
