Pit/Monkey engine - fuel injected

Over the last few weeks I've been working on a project to get a fully mappable ECU working with a Pit/Monkey engine.

I've used a Microsquirt ECU and an old leccy start engine I had lying around.

I've fitted a Ford EDIS style ignition trigger wheel which has 36 teeth and one missing tooth in place of the standard generator with 1 pick up tooth, this allows more accurate timing as the ECU knows exactly where the engine is at any given time.

I picked up a Honda CBF125 fuel pump as it is external to the petrol tank and draws a small amount of current, it also has it's own fuel pressure regulator.

I also picked up a Honda CBF125 throttle body, complete with 1 injector and throttle position sensor, air inlet temp sensore and a manifold absolute pressure sensor.

The ignition pickup is a standard VR type and has been mounted into the generator cover so it sits 2mm away from the 36-1 trigger wheel.

The trigger wheel is mounted on the back of the starter clutch.

Running a standard 'as supplied' ignition advance curve and a basic fuel map generated using a tool supplied with the ECU - I have had it started today, it runs, not brilliantly but enough to proove the system has potential.

I need to change the MAP sensor as it's giving strange readings, I also need to change the air inlet temp sensor and fit an wideband 02 sensor so the fuel system will auto-tune itself once the basic ignition map is sorted.

I've taken a couple of pics today, lots of bodging visible - here they are:

Re: Pit/Monkey engine - fuel injected

have you mounted the motor to a test bed??i cant seem to find how the engine is secure to stop it moving about...you need a good extractor in that shed before you die of poisoning .

looks good so far,did the ecu come with the disc/program to re-map?

Micro squirt?

Is this a "Ripoff" of mega squirt?

We use the Ford EDIS trigger wheels on the old c20xe engines

It wobbles a bit, but nothing major, the exhaust is sectional so I angle it out of the door when running, so no fumes

You download everything from the makers website, that way it's all up to date.

No, it's made by B&G, but it doesn't come in a kit, it comes ready built as it's all SMT except for the ingition coil drivers which are normal transistors.

As it's SMT (surface mount) the ECU is very small, you can see it bolted to the wall on the left of the first photo with the big cable coming out the bottom.

Yep you're right, but they aren't tunable as they aren't open source, plus you are restricted to the components you can use, plus they are very basic setups.

The Mega/Microsquirts use 12x12 maps for VE, spark advance and will run closed loop fuelling with either narrow or wideband 02, that's just scratching the surface of what they can do.

The one I'm using has tons of options you wouldn't get going the Innova route, for instance you couldn't run a turbocharger as the Innova setup wouldn't understand manifold pressure above what you would get in atmospheric conditions.

Once this setup is dialled in it's getting either a Mitsubishi TD-02 or an IHI RHB-3 turbocharger and mapped to suit.

It'll be running either Alpha-N or Alpha-N blend, closed loop wideband 02, barometric pressure compensation once it's being force fed

It's going to be a good while yet.

I'm not going to be putting it in a Pit or Monkey though, I've done so much to the Monkey that it would mean undoing a fair bit of work to fit it.

The bike it's destined for is my 43 year old Honda SS50, mainly as I want something different, all the decent SS50's have all been restored to 100% original condition, this 'creation' will really upset the purists out there.

I won't be using this P.O.S 110 engine, it will be going on a modded YX140 with all the usual mods but with lowered compression ratio and beefed up internals to cope with the extra power. I'm doing it more because I can and will learn some new stuff, rather than the eventually finished article.

This is the same style SS50 as the one I've got:
