Smile Running my engine in properly.

Hi guys rite then i am going to be running my new engine in on the weekend and i have learned the technique of short hard bursts of accelaration and hard decelaration i just wanted to check that im doing it properly

Do i change the oil once the bike has been run in or can i keep driving like normall?

Once i start the bike for the first time do i leave it ticking over for a certain ammount of time?

Do i set mixture settings on the carb to the revs of the bike?
(so it's ticking over and not dieing out)

cheers guys

Re: Running my engine in properly.

use a good quality oil to run it in not standard 10w 40w or for running in i use 15w 40w then change back to 10w 40w after running in id say if you want to rag your bike as soon as you get to the track leave it ticking over in your garden for a few tanks of fuel and jus turn up the tick over a bit if you run it in the better way the first way you said no more than half revs and alterating throttle. once run in make sure you warm up the engine before high revs or you will have to have new piston rings in no time and change the oil after running in

3-4 tanks of fuel i use

Exclamation Re: Running my engine in properly.

i have alredy put 10w /40w oil in the bike it won't harm it will it??

i have just read an article about running in engines and it says not to let the bike tick over for a few tanks it just says to:

once start bike for first time let it warm up

then using 2nd 3rd , 4th open the throttle so that the rings seat against the cylinder properly.

and it also says to not use synthetic oil but use 10w/40 petroleum car oil is this right????????

Thats right, Fully synthetic oil is no good in bikes. Put some in my vtr1000 once, it made the clucth slip like mad

Thumstar!

Your right about the ticking over, dont run it in like that, it will work but the piston rings are under not alot of force. you what them to be under high load for short periods at least, this means they are being pressed against the cylinder wall, bedding them in and not aloowing any gas or oil to escape. Trust me im a motorsport engineer! What you wrote in your first post would work perfect! nice bursts of open throttle. If your on a track its perfect, ride around gently then open up on the straight.

This will give you the best run in as possible and will make the engine run as best as possible.

15min rag, stop bike, drain oil, fill back up, go ride for the day, then change it at the end of the day (before the oil cools down of course)

before it cools down so that you can drain all the oil out sufficiently. know the difference between wet & hard superglue

and yes
