Bike: Thumpstar 125!
Thumbs down Help Needed Please? 125 Thumpstar

I Recently bought a Thumpstar 125 'not running right' for cheap.
Took it home new spark plug fresh fuel , got it running just about.
when it starts it sometimes spits fuel out from the carb and the kickback from the kickstart nearly took my leg off lol.
anyways would this be timing issue or valve clearance.
when it does start , give it a little throttle and it dies. just about idling but sounds rough. If it is the timing/ valve clearance is that something easy to do any tips will be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it could be either timing or valve clearances or like jono says the carb so if it was me I'd cover all the basis, If its been stood clean the carb properly then search on youtube (OOracing valve clearances) and do what he says on there but don't forget TDC on the firing stroke if you don't do it right don't bother doing it at all!!!!.
Hope this helps

Re: Help Needed Please? 125 Thumpstar

How would i know if its on the firing stroke to adjust the valves?. cleaned the carb along with the jets but nothing adjusted mixture screw on carb nothing.
not an expert when it comes with timing etc, looked online to adjust valves that looks ok to do just the timing part im struggling with. arhhhhhhhhh
i dont want to muck it up by adjusting valves wrong, would it be easier to bring it to a shop, dont want to chuck money at it when a new engine is cheap enough!

Thanks for the prmpt replies!

Yes only now seen the link, Thats seems ok to do, where would i purchase the feeler gauge too? Looked online and there are loads of different ones lol! and would my valve clearance be the same as in the video from OOracing.
Thanks again! will check timing tomorrow a little on dark side if all is ok i will get the valves done asap.

I think gauges are about £3.50 in halfords mate.
He explains about top dead centre and firing stroke on the vid mate.

Got the bike running tidy now, it was the stator plate wire rubbing on the magnito causing it to do all of this, when the bike is started now it pops alot and flames come out of the exhaust lol. put new spark plug and fresh fuel, must be the carb, lean or to rich, another thing i have to look at!
