Help Needed Please? 125 Thumpstar

I Recently bought a Thumpstar 125 'not running right' for cheap.
Took it home new spark plug fresh fuel , got it running just about.
when it starts it sometimes spits fuel out from the carb and the kickback from the kickstart nearly took my leg off lol.
anyways would this be timing issue or valve clearance.
when it does start , give it a little throttle and it dies. just about idling but sounds rough. If it is the timing/ valve clearance is that something easy to do any tips will be really appreciated.
