Thumbs up Clarkey's Pit Project

Hi all,

It's mad that this forum is still going! I tried to log into my old account named Clarkee but I've forgot the password, so created a new one.

Since being a kid, we always messed about on crappy pit bikes (used to ride a friends Dream 50cc Semi Auto at one point ), but always wanted a decent example for myself some day..

After a spur of the moment decision, a friend and I picked up two half-decent CW / Stomp bikes from up north.

Here they are in the back of the van when we got home..

My bike is the black one (YX160)!

Some more shots when we got them home...

Unfortunately when we went to pick up the bikes, the black YX160 (my one) was smoking like a gooden!

Got the seller to knock £100 off as I knew it was going to be either new piston / barrel or valve stem oil seals.

Since then, we have been on a few rides locally just to see what they are like and we were really impressed, but you could literally follow my trail probably 10 minutes after I've been there as the smoke was thick, dark and it lingered!

Few relevant points at this stage...
  • The YX140 runs spot on, nothing really needed. Real solid bike.
  • The YX140 already has Pro Taper bars
  • The YX160 engine isn't happy.
  • The YX160 doesn't look great with the tired plastics.
  • I really don't like Renthal bars on these.
  • Snapped the front brake lever when putting the YX160 in the van. Oops!
The bikes have been with us for a month or two now and we haven't really done anything with them. Whaddon motorcross track is local-ish to us so we should be actually using these bikes!

After a bit of self-convincing I decided to make a start and order some parts for my bike.

I am currently waiting on delivery for...

Engine
  • YX160 Complete head
  • YX160 Barrel & piston kit
  • YX160 Oil filter
  • Putoline DX4 oil (ready for service after new top-end)
  • Feeler gauge (good to keep an eye on clearances)
  • Racing CDI and red ignition coil (why not)
  • NGK ER9EH Spark Plug
Body
  • Honda red/black high rise seat (for that OEM feel )
  • Hustle ignition cover (replacing the existing red one with a black one)
  • New style Rockstar plastics & graphics (picture of them)
  • New plastics fitting kit (bolts etc)
  • Red rocket dust caps (yolo m9)
Drivetrain
  • Renthal R1 428 Chain
  • Renthal chain lube
  • Talon rear sprocket (38)
  • Talon front sprocket (16)
  • Front sprocket pinion retainer
  • Rear chain tensioners (current ones are bit worn)
Controls
  • ASV F3 Levers (genuine)
  • Pro Taper bars (yay)
  • Pro Taper grips
  • WRacing throttle & cable
  • New front brake master cylinder (which snapped in the van)
  • Wireless speedo
The bike will be stripped to frame and fully cleaned before rebuilding with the new parts. I will keep this project updated as often as I can. Delivery estimates that everything should be here by Thursday so I hoping I can sort everything on Saturday so we can hit Whaddon MX on Sunday and test it all out!

Future plans
I really like the idea of going SM on this and getting it road registered but there is so much BS involved in registering a used pit bike frame!
Would love to hear any suggestions or thoughts from everyone!

All updates will be added as replies to this thread, rather then an edit of this OP!

In terms of wheelie power, the difference doesn't really seem noticeable, but the top speed on the 160 (even with a shit load of black smoke coming out) SEEMS quicker top end to what SEEMS to be about 10 -15 mph.

I expect the 160 to feel a bit quicker once the top end has been refreshed.

Re: Clarkey's Pit Project

Just so you know the 160 isn't 15mph faster than the 140 in the real world. I raced in the 160 class last year on a 140, and if I cracked the throttle the same time as the lad in front on a 160/155 I'd still be pretty much in his tyre tracks at the end of the straight, maybe a couple of bike lengths difference - there is maybe a couple of BHP real world difference I'd guess.

Yeah, there really isn't much in it to be worried about. What I said above was based on a quick blast so I hope Google searches don't end up here with people moaning at me for chatting shite

Re: Clarkey's Pit Project

Hi again all,

Quite a bit of an update!

I tried to take as many pictures as I could, but I kept forgetting so these will have to do

The new barrel, piston & head...

The old head was a bit of a state (too much smoke!).
Unfortunately the exhaust studs were literally seized in old the head, so I've ordered some new ones and used some other bolts for now. Not the greatest fit but it doesn't leak.

Top end came off surprisingly easily! I seriously don't think this engine had much use to be honest. I know its pretty black due to the smoking but the general condition wasn't too bad for a used bike.

The whole rebuild process went pretty smoothly

Engine now in the frame! Made a bit of a mistake at this point as I didn't put in the foot pegs Had to go back and do that when I realised...

Talon rear sprocket on! Look at those horrible / stupid black things that go under the bolts. Absolute monkey metal. I only put them on because they were on it before. Hate them

Front Talon sprocket on...

Pro Tapers are on! I will probably end up with different / lower bars for SM...

Pegs are now under the engine and it's starting to come together!

Had to go to local motorbike repair shop to get a link remove from the Renthal chain. I tried using DIY stuff at home but absolutely no chance. The chain came pretty lubed up with this horrible white-ish stuff...

Best of the shit bunch throttle (for now)...

ASV clutch lever on here. Can't put the front brake lever on as I've got a stupidly little front brake master cylinder which isn't big enough to take the size of the lever. I tested the fitment on the other bike which has the usual size master cylinder on it and it fits perfectly, so I've ordered one of them too...

First of the plastics starting to go on...

And here we come to how she sits at the minute...

Started her up on 5th or 6th kick. Had a really high tick over and I couldn't figure out why as all the adjusters where set to the lowest. I ended up replacing the old throttle cable with the new one that came with the throttle as it had better adjusters. Fixed

I then took her down the private road and I wasn't expected to be put on the back wheel in 2nd. Need to get used to this 1/4 turn throttle

I took it easy after that for obvious reasons.

Let her warm up a bit and she was purring like a beauty! Pretty fucking happy!

Tomorrow I'll be getting the engine up to temp and checking the valve clearances and then dropping the oil and putting in a new filter and oil.

It got a bit late and as we all know, neighbours and noise don't mix

Next plans

As you could probably see there are no grips on the bike. Still waiting for them!

Also waiting for delivery on...
  • New exhaust studs & nuts
  • Bigger (normal size) master cylinder
  • Renthal chain lube

The wheels on the bike are AWFUL. Slightly buckled and they look shite so I've decided to go straight down super moto route and will be ordering some of these when some more funds are available

I know my chain is a bit slack. I got sick of adjusting it for now and it was fine to test out the engine quickly.

I recently learned Whilton Mill isn't too far away and my buddy has a van so will be coming up when this is ready.

Few thoughts on bits for super moto spec...
  • Wheels / tyres
  • Crash bobbins
  • Peg sliders
  • Sump catch tray and new sump bolt with ties
  • Hand guards (please recommend me some decents ones!)
  • Oil breather system (any recommendations?)
  • Maybe new forks and swingarm

Let me know what you think and please share any suggestions / critiques!

Matt
