No, sub machine guns use 9mm or .45 cal bullets, hand gun ammo, hence the name Machine pistol,- AKA Sub machine gun

Rifles use NATO 5.56mm rounds or the old AK47 MK1 uses 7.62
Better at long range and the rounds can go through body armour and the 7.62 would go through a body and who ever is stupid enough to stand behind someone who is being shot by one.
