Finally started work on my ATC - front wheel build pics!
Got my spacers back from Dix yesterday, so could finally assemble the front wheel. Sounds like a simple job - but this is probably the most complicated front wheel setup you will find on a pit bike! - Sorry for so many pics.
Anyway, The problem with ATC front wheels is they are generally very heavy, they are drum brake or no brake and are too small.
So I decided to build one which could use a disc brake, would be as lightweight as possible so all Alluminium or Carbon fibre construction and which would take Quad tyres.
Started by laser cutting the disc adapters - back in Januray.
Then when the arrived I had to drill the disc holes to line up with the hubs holes. (Also stated to lathe/turn the spacers which is why they are all over the worktop)
The Disc I was using had slightly too small holes for the bolts I wanted to use, so these had to be bored out and cleaned up first.
I then bolted them together along with the spacers, ending up with the disc adapter ready for the spacers to be powdercoated - 3rd pic shows the adapter mocked up on the wheel/hub.
Got my spacers back from Dix Yesterday - all powdercoated black - Thanks Dix!
With the spacers back, I had everything to start building the wheel with:
The hubs I am using are CNC'd billet hubs meant for the rear wheels on a 450 quad. So they have no bearings as standard, I got these carriers milled up to carry the 12mm axle bearings: (4 bearings in total per wheel).
The bearings slide into the end of the adapter/carrier.
These are the quad bike hubs which the carrier slide straight into.
They clamp the carries through 2x M8 Hex key bolts.
The wheel I am using is a one-off Hiper carbon fibre wheel. It is made up of 2 carbon fibre sections and a stainless steel PCD adapter in the middle. Because quads work to a 5+3 or 3+5 etc offset then wheel would have been too wide for the forks. I rang Hiper and they made me a one-off wheel using to of the 3" sections so it would take a 7" front quad tyre.
Mocked up how the hub would sit in the rim
Now ready to assemble the disc adapter with the powdercoated spacers.
The disc sits so far out to allow the caliper to clear the Beadlock ring.
Once the adapter was done, I mocked it up on the hub to check it fitted.
And also checked it all fitted the rim ok
Then there was the fun part of fitting the tyres - Not easy on a dual beadlock rim.
All the beadlock bolts had to be torqued up.
Finished wheel.
Back to building the hub - connecting the brake adapter to the hub.
One side of the hub fitted to the wheel.
other side bolting on.
Finished wheel!
And a quick mockup with the Marzocchi leg.
Just need to mill up an axle/spindle now and I can start work on getting the billet marzocchi clamps designed.

Fun's not the word - Its taken months to get it started, just because everytime I try to build a section I find I need to make another spacer/adapter etc. Its nice to make some progress finally. Ive got 90% of all the parts now, but still need to weld the exhaust/mill the clamps etc.

Yeh Ive got a few identical to the one on the front wheel, both in the small and lareg size. Im just holding onto them until Ive got both the front and back brakes working incase I up one of the discs and need a spare then they will be up forsale.
